How to Sell Your
AI Tool in 2026

Most AI tools sell for 2–5× what they're worth. The ones that sell for 10–20× have one thing in common: they were graded and positioned before going to market. Here's the process.

Why most AI tools undersell

The gap between what founders ask and what buyers pay comes down to one thing: documentation.

What sells at 15–20× MRR

  • Works without the founder explaining anything
  • One sentence that describes what it does, for who
  • Revenue documented with Stripe or bank statements
  • A new user can onboard in under 15 minutes
  • Prompts, IP and accounts all transferable
  • External demand signal (reviews, inbound, community)

What sells at 2–5× MRR (if at all)

  • Needs a 2-hour call to explain the product
  • "It's basically like X but with AI" positioning
  • Revenue is verbal — no paper trail
  • Setup requires founder's personal accounts
  • Codebase is undocumented, can't be handed over
  • Only social proof is the founder's own posts

The AI Asset Score — your pricing signal

5 dimensions. 0–100 score. The grade tells you your multiple before you go to market.

A Grade
75+
Active buyer matching. Typical multiple: 12–20× MRR. Ready to close.
B Grade
60–74
Operator matching available. Typical multiple: 6–12× MRR. Small gaps to address.
C Grade
Below 60
Not acquisition-ready yet. Grade includes specific fixes to reach B or A in 2–4 weeks.

Drop #1 range: 58–83/100. 3 tools at A grade. Buyer intros underway.

How to sell your AI tool — step by step

The process that gets 10–20× multiples instead of 2–5×.

01

Get a free AI Asset Score

Submit your tool at aiasset.market/#preview-grade. Takes 5 minutes. You'll get a 0–100 score across 5 dimensions. The grade tells you your current market multiple and exactly what's holding it down.

02

Close the grade gaps (if any)

C-grade tools need specific fixes before going to market — usually documentation, credential separation, or one proof of value. Most C→B upgrades take 1–2 weeks. B→A can often happen in days. We tell you exactly what to fix.

03

Get featured in the Weekly Drop

A and B grade tools get featured to active buyers in the next Weekly Drop. Drops happen weekly. Each drop has 10 slots. The Drop summary goes to buyers who have pre-registered acquisition briefs matching your tool type.

04

Receive buyer introductions

We make direct email introductions between you and matched buyers. You negotiate directly. No auction, no public listing, no bidding war. Just a warm intro to a buyer who already said yes to your asset type.

05

Close the deal

We stay available as a resource throughout the deal. Our fee is 5–10% of the transaction — and only if a deal closes. If the intro doesn't lead to a deal, you owe us nothing.

Selling platform comparison

For AI tools in the $5k–$100k range.

Platform Grade/Signal Buyer type Fee
AIAsset.Market 5-dimension AI Asset Score (free) Operators, builders, acquirers 5–10% on close
Acquire.com Basic metrics only PE, search funds, brokers 4–15% + listing fee
Flippa Verified revenue badge Individual buyers, flippers 10–15% + listing fee
MicroAcquire (Acquire) None — self-reported Broad, many tire-kickers Paid subscription required
Cold outreach / X None Unknown "Free" but takes months

Our edge: we work exclusively with AI-native tools and have operators who can't find what they need on traditional M&A platforms. They pre-register briefs with us and we match when a graded tool fits.

What types of AI tools can be sold

Any AI-powered product with at least one paying customer or 100 active users.

AI SaaS

Subscription products with an AI core — not just an AI widget. If removing the AI makes the product stop working, it qualifies.

Automation / Agent

n8n, Make, Zapier workflows. LangChain pipelines. Custom Python automations with external clients. Any AI system that runs without the user present.

AI Newsletter / Channel

AI-generated or AI-curated publications with real subscribers. The content system must be documented and reproducible by a new operator.

GPT Wrapper / Prompt Pack

A tuned interface around an LLM for a specific use case. Valuable when the prompt engineering is non-obvious and the user base is established.

No-Code AI App

Bubble, Webflow, Glide, or other no-code platforms with an AI integration. Highly transferable — no developer needed for handoff.

AI Data / Persona

Trained models, fine-tuned LLMs, curated datasets, or AI persona systems with documented performance and a clear deployment path.

Frequently asked

My tool is pre-revenue. Can I still sell it?

Yes. Pre-revenue tools are graded and listed. They score lower on criterion 3 (Revenue Proof) but can still reach B grade and attract operators who want revenue share rather than a flat acquisition. A tool with 200 active free users and a clear monetization path is sellable.

What's the minimum revenue to get a good grade?

No hard minimum. Even $300/month with 3 months of Stripe history beats "we have 10 verbal commitments." The grade rewards documented proof — not scale. We've graded a $400 MRR tool that scored higher than a $3k MRR tool because the documentation was better.

Do you charge for the grade?

No. The AI Asset Score is free. We charge only if we broker a transaction — 5% for deals under $50k, 10% for deals above. If no deal closes, you pay nothing.

How long does it take to sell?

A-grade tools in Weekly Drops typically get buyer introductions within 7 days of the Drop closing. Deal timeline after intro: 2–6 weeks depending on due diligence. The fastest deals we've seen closed in 9 days.

Can I sell part of it? Or just find an operator?

Yes to both. Full acquisition, partial stake, and operator matching are all options. Operator deals are especially common for tools with 100–1000 users that haven't monetized yet — the operator runs and grows the tool in exchange for a revenue share.

My code is a mess. Does that matter?

Less than you think. Buyers care about what the tool does, not how the code is written — unless the buyer needs to extend it. What matters: it runs reliably without you, and someone can understand what it does from the outside. Clean docs beat clean code every time in the $5k–$30k range.
